This has been a tight week money-wise, (and by tight I mean when one ponders how one can feed a family with a cup of flour and three shriveled grapes. Don't you love those weeks?) so rather than be able to go out and buy supplies to finish my brother's wedding quilt, I was forced to finish up some other loose ends. Not a bad thing, in my opinion. I present all 64 blocks of my x and + quilt. Yes!!

Eh? Eh? Oh, how I loves it. And when (soon!) this baby is finished, I will be able to cross #4: Finish every last half-finished project sitting in my studio off my list. Of course, I'm not counting new projects I started after I made my Thirteen by thirteen resolution, because that would just mean it would never, ever, EVER get crossed off. :) Anyway, I plan on putting some white sashing between the blocks to finish. I know it's not the way these quilts are usually put together, but a) I feel like I want the blocks to pop a little, rather than be all over the place, b) un-sashed it would be too small, and I really don't want to make any more of these blocks, and c) I don't care if it's normal or not.
The only bummer about this quilt is that I wanted to make one for ages, and now that I have I know that I will probably never EVER make one again. The blocks are just so fussy. Not so much to put together--that part is relatively painless. But since every single block is a unique mix of scraps, picking out the fabric for each individual square was a giant pain in the patootie. It took AGES to get a few blocks finished, and I would find myself thinking, "What would I rather do today: bang my head repeatedly against a wall, or make some more x and + blocks?"
Why is that a bummer? Because this sucker is intended for someone else, as a Christmas/Thank You present for my friend's sister, who has graciously put up with and made food for my husband and other men from our church when they go deer hunting on her property every winter. I really hope she likes it, because I gotta admit to being pretty torn about giving it up. I can't wait to show you all the finished deal, I hope it looks as good as I think it will!

I love the idea of white sashing. I think you are right in that it will really make each block pop!
I too think sashing will be a nice addition. The x & + quilt that DGS gave me is not sashed. It's lovely, of course (I've been using it the last few months!), but does boggle the eyes to gaze upon. I can see how sashing will help you be able to enjoy each block.
Also, I found making the block annoying for the same reason. It's scrappy but planned. And lots of pieces too!
I totally get your title on this post. Often, when we've got nothing going on in the money department, I come up with my best recipes, and produce my best housework days, et cetera. You know that I really don't know much about quilt making... But, your quilt looks like it's going to be another awesome one. I'm sure your brother and his love will LOVE it. :O)
P.S. My old camera hated the dark, too. Which is why I am soooooo thankful for my new camera. Now, if only I would have the time to figure it all out...
