The Most Disappointing Day of my LIFE

My oldest can be so overdramatic sometimes, and lately everything he experiences is the best or worst day of his LIFE. You really have to put the emphasis on that last word to get the full effect of what he means by it I guess. Last Friday after our homeschool co-op we had to go get new tires. Thankfully there was a Chik-fil-a nearby so they spent that hour and a half playing on the playground and drinking milkshakes instead of bouncing off the walls in a tiny waiting area that smelled like tires. Once we got done and we were driving home, he announced, "Wow. Co-op AND milkshakes AND the Chik-fil-a playground? That was the best day of my LIFE."

Well this morning I had to go get an allergy test which I was kinda not looking forward to. The prospect of 48 needles was not appealing, and while it didn't hurt that bad it was still not my favorite thing ever. I don't quite know what I was expecting--maybe a gluten sensitivity at the most. I knew I didn't have any real serious allergies but they were testing me for sensitivities. So they poke me a million times and immediately one area starts itching like crazy. Two bumpies right next to each other in particular. When she came back and looked at it she started laughing and shaking her head.
"What?" I asked.

"Well," she said, "This one right here is histamine, which you should be reacting to. So that's normal. But this one here...well we all know it's the root of all evil but I've never seen anyone react like this to it."

"Which one is it?" I ask, wondering if I'm going to have to start eating soy or something awful because I'm allergic to meat.

She points to the sheet of allergens and guess what is written there?

Sugar.

Freaking SUGAR. Are you kidding me? Sugar? Really? For the person who loves to bake this is like...I don't even know how to explain my feelings. It is just...ugh. I mean I don't have that big of a sweet tooth but sugar is in everything. How do you avoid it?

When I told my oldest his response was, "Wow. This must be the most disappointing day of your LIFE."

Indeed. :)

In fourth grade I desperately wanted to fail my vision test so I could get glasses and be cool just like my sister. Sometimes I feel that way about being allergic to sugar because I think being forced not to eat it would help me...not eat it. Of course that's ridiculous because like you said it is so prevalent in everything we eat. I'm sorry you have to deal with such a difficult allergy and I hope you're able to find a few folks who can really help you figure out how to work with it.
I've been following your blog for a month or so now and am so impressed with how you tackle so many different projects and do them really really well. I have a feeling you'll do the same with this!

nOOOOOOOOOOOO! See, this is why I refuse to get allergy tested. Yeah, I'm real mature.

What type of sugar? Sucrose, glucose, etc? That could make a difference. Some people are very glucose intolerant but can have sucrose.

A friend of mine found out last year she was allergic to fructose. No fruit for her. I was on the SCD diet for awhile that gets rid of all sugar, ALL sugar, plus a whole bunch of everything else that too complicated to digest. Sugar is a disaccharide, two molecules - too difficult. Honey is a monosaccharide, fructose variety and a-okay. You'll need more details on what -ose you are reacting to but there is a wealth of information out there. I can't imagine going through the allergy grieving process without some comfort food. Chocolate without sugar is not that comforting. I want to make you something sugar free but good to get you through it. Sigh.

Holy crap!! Dude. That is rubbish!! I hope some of what those girls up there are saying means you're maybe only allergic to SOME sugars. What a bummer.

I'll give you first place, but I've got a good second: I live in Italy and I'm allergic to sulfates which are the preservatives in WINE (and a lot of other foods) but especially WINE!
What's the point of living in Italy if you can't drink wine?

Day-um, and I thought being allergic to chocolate and all seafood sucked! With any luck, it's just cane sugar and beet sugar is safe for you. (fingers crossed!)
